I have to admit I didn’t know what the Sonny Angels were until a few months ago. Having a baby opens you up to a whole new world that seems to exist in a parallel universe. Sonny Angels has been alive for many years, only I have not forgotten his existence. Not now! I’ve developed a strong attachment to them and it seems I’m not alone.
What is Sonny Angel?
If you’re reading this Angels come from Japan and are actually a smaller version of the popular kewpie dolls. They are a miniature cupid style boy and wondering what the hell is Sonny Angels, don’t worry, here’s the short answer. She is naked with angel wings on his back {I know it sounds weird}.
What makes Sonny’s Angels unique is that they all have different headgear. There is a huge range of Sonny Angels, including four different animal series, sea series, fruit series, and vegetable series. There are also cake series and special edition series released to celebrate occasions such as Easter and Christmas.
Sonny Angels are sold in blind boxes, so you never know what you’re going to get. I didn’t like that idea at first, but now I think it adds to the thrill and surprise of collecting it. You can of course buy a whole box of all 12 for each series to make sure you get them all, but I prefer to buy one or two at a time and find out which one we’re going to get when we get them unpack.
My favorites are the animal series and the fruit series, so currently I only collect one or two at a time. My collection only started with two and has somehow expanded to twelve so far, but I’m far from done. I am seriously addicted to these handsome guys! I really, really, really want the fawn, the rabbit, the mouse, the elephant, the strawberry, and the pineapple – which I haven’t gotten yet. But trust me, I’ll keep trying.
First, let’s look at the Sonny Angel dolls
These dolls come in several different themed sets. The themes are reflected by the type of hat that the doll is wearing. The themes I’ve seen include animals, fruits, flowers, vegetables…and even chocolates. All of the dolls are cute, but I decided to focus on the animal themes. I chose one figure from the Animal (Version 1) series and another from the Marine series.
These figures cost about $10 on Amazon. I’ve never seen them in stores, so I’m not sure if their suggested retail price is lower.
Robbys and Secret Sonny Angels
In addition to the 12 Sonny Angels in each series, there is also a Secret Angel and a Robby Angel. Secrets is an extra Sonny Angel {very different animal} not included in the package. Each series has its own secret, but not every box of 12 can have a secret, even if you buy the whole box, you may not find it.
Each of the 12 boxes contains only one secret, giving a 1/144 chance of finding it, making it rare to find and collect. They also replace one of the 12 Sonny Angels in the box instead of coming to help. I’ve never been lucky enough to have a secret angel, but I’m not surprised because I’m only 12.
But I was lucky enough to find Robby Angel. Robby Angel is smaller than the regular Sonny Angels and looks like a cross between a dog and a bear. He is in hiding with another Sonny Angel and again has a 1/144 chance so is highly collectible. Each series has a different color of Robby.
Special Edition Sonny Angel Collections
In addition to the 8 regular editions of Sonny Angel, there are also special and limited editions available each year. Limited edition sets tend to sell out pretty quickly, so if you want the full set, I recommend buying them as soon as they’re released. Some of the newer limited edition Sonny Angel sets include Good Luck Japan, Cherry Blossom Night Version, Birthday Gift, Space Adventures, Wonderland, Sky Color, and Cactus.
Sonny Angel Clothes
There is just something so cute about these little guys. To be honest, I started collecting them for the tuber (that’s my excuse anyway), even though he’s only allowed to play with them under supervision to make sure he doesn’t rip their heads off or draw on them. The rest of the time they live in their little shed.
You may have noticed that over the past two weeks, I’ve been sharing photos with Sonny Angels for #fmsphotoaday prompts. I always find that the Fat Mum Slim Photo a Day challenges help me be more creative with my photography, so I decided to do them again {although I’m a little random about posting daily because sometimes life gets in the way.I decided to challenge myself to use my Sonny Angels for prompts to make it a little harder and a lot more fun! It’s also a way for me to actually use Sonny Angels {and justify my addiction} instead of seeing them sitting around my house all the time.

conclusion
I know. it’s not really an accessory, but I can’t help it. If you’re not familiar with the Sonny Angel story, it’s been ten years of Kew Piekitsch, cute collectibles, and annoying things you don’t really need. Sonny is a *thing* in Japan and Asia, as well as in the US, but hasn’t made much of an impact in the UK yet. But just as Hello Kitty comes up with her own little story, so does Sonny Angel, and here it is:
“Sonny Angel is a cute boy with a headdress. He doesn’t talk to you, but Sonny Angel makes you smile, makes you happy, and makes your everyday life a little more enjoyable. As your little friend, Sonny Angel is always by your side, protecting you, comforting you, and making you laugh… that’s Sonny Angel’s mission.
