Essential Tips to Select the Right Pool Fencing

A swimming pool in your backyard is a great way to cool off on hot days and have fun with family and friends. However, it is essential to remember that swimming pools can be dangerous, especially for young children. That’s why it is legally required in Australia to build fencing around every swimming pool, at least 30cm deep.

Consider a few things when selecting pool fencing. These include the materials, maintenance, installation, safety, dimensions, design, and budget.

Choose Your Preferred Pool Fencing Material

To begin with, get acquainted with the commonly used pool fencing materials: PVC, aluminium, and glass. Aluminium offers durability and longevity. However, glass, particularly the toughened variety, is often considered the best choice due to its blend of security and visual appeal. However, it’s important to note that glass is typically the priciest option.

    Getting Your Budget Right

Consider your budget. Are you open to investing more in frameless glass, or does an aluminium fence that might obstruct your view sound more reasonable? Weigh the costs against your needs and aesthetic preferences.

    Maintenance

Remember to factor in maintenance expenses. Although PVC fencing might be more affordable initially, aluminium often has a longer lifespan and requires fewer repairs. Glass is the most accessible material to maintain, as it does not require any painting or staining and is easy to clean. Aluminium requires more maintenance, as they need to be painted or stained regularly, and they can be more challenging to clean.

    Installation

Installation intricacy is another aspect to bear in mind. PVC fencing is usually the simplest and most cost-effective to install. On the other hand, the weight and intricacy of glass fencing generally result in higher installation costs and professional installation is recommended. Furthermore, relying on professionals for pool fencing installation is advisable to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations.

    Safety

All pool fencing must meet the safety standards set by the Australian Government. Pool fences must be:

    • At least 1.2 metres high with, at most, a 100mm ground clearance.
    • Have no gaps that a child or toddler can fit through.
    • Be inflexible enough so that children cannot force themselves through it.
    • Be adequately sturdy to endure strong winds and other external forces.
    • It shouldn’t have climbable features.

    Customising Dimensions

While adhering to safety requirements, you can tailor the dimensions of your fencing to suit your needs. Glass panels can be adjusted in terms of width, and the thickness of the glass can be varied. Similarly, aluminium and PVC fencing offer flexibility in terms of the gap in width and fence height, accommodating your preferences.

    Design Harmony

You should consider the design of your pool fencing – choose a material and style that complements the overall look of your backyard. If you have a minimalistic space, glass fencing might be a good option – it is a sleek and modern material allowing natural light to flow freely and won’t overwhelm your backyard. If you have a more rustic or traditional space, aluminium or PVC fencing might be a better choice.

Thorough Planning for Your Dream Pool

Many homeowners aspire to have their pool, but this endeavour demands careful planning. Thoughtfully approaching the project is crucial to avoid potential financial and legal complications. Opting for proper pool fencing is a good starting point.

Considering the legal obligations, budget, and desired aesthetic, you can establish a secure and beautiful pool area. A well-chosen pool fence enhances safety and contributes to the overall ambience of your outdoor space.

By aligning safety considerations with your design preferences, you’re on the path to realising your dream pool while ensuring a cohesive and inviting environment.

Additional Considerations for Choosing Pool Fencing

    • The climate in your area: If you live in an area witnessing heavy winds, you will need to select a durable material that can withstand these conditions, such as toughened glass.
    • The amount of privacy you want: If you want a lot of privacy, you can choose a solid fencing material, such as glass or aluminium. If you want less privacy, choose a more open fencing material like PVC.
    • The age of your children: If you have young children, you will need a very secure fence to prevent them from climbing over it.
    • Visual appeal: You want to choose a fencing material that complements the overall look of your backyard.
    • Your budget: Pool fencing can be expensive, so you must decide how much you will spend.

Considering all these factors, you can choose the suitable pool fencing for your home and keep your family safe. Regardless of the material you choose, ensure that professional pool fence installers install the pool fencing correctly. Improperly installed pool fencing can be a safety hazard.
